MARLBOROUGH FOLK-ROOTS

TO CELEBRATE OUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY WE PROUDLY PRESENT A FABULOUS DOUBLE BILL FEATURING THE TWO FINEST ACTS IN ENGLISH ROOTS MUSIC

SHOW OF HANDS with Miranda Sykes

Having filled the Albert Hall three times and won the Radio 2 Folk Award as ’Best Live Act’, Show of Hands are in the forefront of the current vibrant acoustic music scene. Steve Knightley’s compelling original songs are powerfully delivered and, whilst often set in his native West Country, touch universal and contemporary themes. Phil Beer’s subtle accompaniments on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and cuatro are underpinned by Miranda Sykes’ double bass and harmonising vocals. Sometimes described as ‘acoustic music with a rock and roll strut’ and ‘world music from the West Country’, no wonder Show of Hands count Peter Gabriel, Tom Robinson and Mick Jagger amongst their many admirers.

WHILE AND MATTHEWS

Winning friends wherever they go, Chris While and Julie Matthews present their unique songs with passion, power and immense musicality, combining folk, soul, rock and jazz influences. Julie is recognised as one of Britain's most talented songwriters. Her work has been covered by many artists, although it is her own haunting voice and expressive piano playing that truly bring it to life. Chris also writes fine and often intensely personal songs and has an unforgettable, rich and soulful voice. Well known for their collaborations with other artists, most notably in the very successful St Agnes Fountain Christmas show, together their harmonies and dynamic playing are irresistible and it is no surprise that they won the award for Best Duo in this year’s Radio 2 Folk Awards.
